Event Recap: Major Garrett at the Nixon Library
Major Garrett at the Nixon Library
CBS Chief White House correspondent Major Garrett visited the Nixon Library on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 to discuss his latest book Mr. Trump’s Wild Ride: The Thrills, Chills, Screams, and Occasional Blackouts of an Extraordinary Presidency.
Garrett has reported on the White House for nearly two decades and has covered four different presidencies for three national news outlets. He started his talk with reference to President Nixon’s often quoted statement, “it’s a long way from Yorba Linda, to the White House,” modifying this to reflect his own journey to our nation’s capitol from his native San Diego saying, “it’s a long way from Kearny Mesa to the White House.”
The reporter gave prepared remarks for less than twenty minutes before opening the discussion to audience questions. The enthusiastic audience asked about topics ranging from the role the press played in the election of Trump, to Garrett’s advice to young reporters, to his favorite White House Press Secretary. Prior to the program Garrett toured the grounds of the Nixon Library and held a mock press conference with students from nearby universities.
