Secretary of Defense James Mattis

At the Nixon Library

Former Defense Secretary and four-star Marine General James Mattis returned to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum on Friday, September 13, 2019, for a conversation with Nixon Foundation President and CEO Hugh Hewitt.

General Mattis was welcomed by a crowd of over 600. The event began with a special ceremony where General Mattis administered the Oath of Enlistment for six re-enlisting U.S. Marines. The families of the re-enlisting Marines, and over thirty active duty Marines and Army soldiers were in attendance to witness the ceremony.

General Mattis then engaged in a compelling discussion with Foundation President Hugh Hewitt about his latest book, Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead recounting many of the foundational experiences of his decades long career commanding American forces into three wars. With Hewitt posing frank questions about his leadership decisions in Iraq and Afghanistan, Mattis offered expert insight into the most notable battles and the lasting lessons from the conflicts.
