Remembering Powell Moore

Powell Moore, who worked for four U.S. Presidents on legislative affairs and public policy, passed away in Washington D.C. on August 13, 2018. He was 80 years old.

Following his time as Press Secretary for Senator Richard B. Russell from 1966 to 1971, Powell Moore joined the Nixon administration in the Justice Department as Deputy Director of Public Information, then served as Director of Press Relations for Nixon’s Inaugural Committee in 1972 and 1973 and then worked in the White House as Legislative Aide to the President.

He continued on the legislative staff during the Ford administration, returned to public service as Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs under President Reagan and again returned to public service as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs under President George W. Bush.

In 2005, he received the U.S. Defense Department’s Medal for Distinguished Public Service from Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

“Powell Moore served President Nixon well, first at the Justice Department and later as a member of the White House Legislative team, said James H. Cavanaugh, chairman of the Richard Nixon Foundation. “Originally from Georgia, he remained a true southern gentleman,” Cavanaugh added.

“Powell Moore was a devout Christian, loving husband and father, patriot of the first order, and loyal to many of us,” said Bill Timmons, former Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs. “His accomplishments in government, politics, and business are tributes to his character, personality, and intellect. Those whose lives he touched were rewarded by his insight, understanding, and sincere friendship. He will be sorely missed,” Timmons added.

“It is with great sadness on his passing, that I write about Powell Moore: friend, colleague and a fierce patriot in the front lines for America. No task was too small or too large for Powell when it came to serving Presidents, Senators and country,” said Ambassador Tom Korologos, who served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs. “Powell was the kind of guy who made instant friendships and I can safely say I don’t think he ever had an enemy. We worked closely together in various venues and his powerful influence on Capitol Hill, the White House, Defense Department, State Department and in the private sector was legendary. Powell was one of a kind. We will miss him greatly,” Ambassador Korologos added.

“Ambassador Moore was a gentleman to the core; but steely tough and focused on what needed doing,” said Wally Johnson, who served as Special Assistant to the President and Assistant Attorney General. “We crossed paths at the White House and the Department of Justice or around the Senate when we both served it seems almost everywhere and then in later life as our careers crossed paths. He will be missed,” Johnson added.
